Subscribing to iTunes

Step 1: Install iTunes

In order to use iTunes, you will first have to install it. If you have already done so, move to step 2. Otherwise, download it from Apple's website and install it. (iTunes works on both PC computers and Apple computers.)

Step 2: Manually subscribe to the podcast

Open iTunes.  On the left hand side you should see a "Podcasts" icon like this:

Click on it. This is where the podcast will be placed as soon as you subscribe.

Next, go to the "Advanced" menu at the top and select "Subscribe to podcast..." like this:

This will bring up a small window that allows you to type the address (known as a URL*) of the podcast:

You will have to type in the text that you see in that box -- that is the URL of the podcast.  The URL is http://www.newcivilizationpodcast.org/newciv/newciv.xml.

After you've typed it in, hit OK.  iTunes will then spend a second two during which time it will come to this website and download the information about the podcast.  Next, the podcast will show up in your iTunes menu.  You may have to click on the triangle next to the podcast name to see the episodes.  It will look something like this:

It may take a minute or two for the first episode to download, and during this time you will see a notification that the episode is downloading.  Notice that iTunes does not automatically download episodes from the past.  If you want to listen to them, you will have to click the "Get" button that you see next to the name of each episode.

To listen to a podcast you have downloaded, double-click it.

Future episodes will be downloaded automatically as they come out.

*What does URL mean?  It stands for Universal Resource Locator.  It is a common method of writing an address on the internet.  You probably notice the format is similar to other "sites."
